Rhythmic Gymnastics

Gymnast performing a high-level split leap

What is Rhythmic Gymnastics?

Rhythmic gymnastics is a sport in which gymnasts perform on a floor with an apparatus: hoop, ball, clubs, ribbon and rope. The sport combines elements of gymnastics, dance and calisthenics; so gymnasts must be strong, flexible, agile, dexterous and coordinated. It can be performed both individually or in group.

In the picture above, you can see Evgeniya Kanaeva - the only individual rhythmic gymnast in history to win two Olympic all-around gold medals.

At the international level, rhythmic gymnastics is a women-only sport. However, some countries are already developing programs in which men can also compete. Learn more about men's Rhythmic Gymnastics here.
