Lalibela

Lalibela Rock Hewn church

Lalibela is a town located in the Amhara Region of northern Ethiopia. It is famous for its remarkable rock-hewn churches, which are considered some of the most important religious and historical sites in Ethiopia. The churches of Lalibela are often referred to as the "New Jerusalem" and are a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The churches were carved directly into the solid rock of the ground during the 12th century, under the rule of King Lalibela, who is credited with their creation. The complex consists of 11 churches, and they are divided into two main groups: the northern cluster and the southern cluster. The churches were carved both externally and internally, with intricate details, crosses, windows, and other religious symbols. The craftsmanship and engineering required for such an undertaking are truly remarkable, and the structures are a testament to the devotion of the people and the ingenuity of the builders.
