Animal Crossing: New Horizon
has sold over
26 million
copies, and I was one of the millions that made a purchase in the
first month of release. Within those 9 months, I have spent over 600 hours of gameplay and $100+ on Amiibo cards. At
this point, almost everyone I know is just as invested in the game as I am.
So what is it about Animal Crossing that makes it so enticing?
For the lack of a better word, the world is a mess, and it sucks, especially in 2020. What this game offers is a stress-free vacation to a peaceful island where every character is pleasant, and players can easily earn enough money to splurge on anything you want. Ultimately, players have a lot of autonomy to play it their way without real-life consequences.
Like all task-oriented gameplay, Animal Crossing was designed to get you hooked by targeting emotions and desires. Every action players make, there is some kind of reward. Even a mundane task like pulling weeds feels like a therapeutic activity. What makes it even harder to stop playing are the friendly characters that feel like they have genuine emotions.
One of the main features of this game is its multi-player function, where people can be socially connected from anywhere in the world. With many cities under Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, this game offers people the chance to hang out with their friends and family while staying inside. Don't know anyone who plays the game? No problem. The cute animal characters are all you need! You can chat with them, exchange gifts, help them with errands, and so much more.
