age old companion and guiding compass seen on our night sky.
The Moon makes Earth more livable due to it controlling our planets
orbiting on its axis. It in turn controls our sea tides, a really cool
mechanism that has influenced human behaviour for thousands of years.
As the Moon orbits Earth, different parts are in sunlight or darkness at
different times. The changing illumination is why, from our perspective,
the Moon goes through phases.
The cycle of illumination occurs once a month and is illustrated below.
