There are up to
451 known species
of mantis shrimp. They generally grow to
around 4 inches (10cm) in length and can breed up to 20 to 30 times in
their lifetime. Mantis shrimp are
solitary crustaceans, so they tend to
be aggressive, territorial, and prefer to hunt alone. These incredible
creatures have quite the punch, smashing it's victims with
the force of a
.22 calibre bullet. These animals evolved before dinosaurs existed and
have compound eyes that consist of
16 photoreceptors, also allowing them
to see UV, visible and polarized light. It's impossible to imagine what a
mantis shrimp sees but incredible to think about.
