The Iberian wolf, the subspecies inhabiting the Iberian Peninsula, has the scientific designation Canis lupus signatus and was described in 1907 by the Spanish zoologist Angel Cabrera. It differs from the wolves inhabiting the rest of Europe mainly by being smaller in size and having a more yellow-brownish fur coloration. Additionally, it has stronger colors and a different pattern of coloration on its face and muzzle.
