So, what exactly is
Surface Pattern Design?
Surface pattern design is the art of creating repeating patterns that cover almost all of the products we see around us, from fabric to wallpaper, wrapping paper to stationary, upholstery to rugs, and so much more. If you pick up a product in your home, you might notice patterns - obvious or subtle - that are created to cover that item and enhance its appeal. What is unique about surface pattern design, as opposed to graphic design, is that a surface pattern designer creates patterns that can be repeated infinitely and seamlessly. It is beautiful blend of utilizing creativity within the field of visual arts and powerful software to create designs that are useable in so many facets of modern life.
Some of the places you may find surface patterns are:
- Wallcoverings: art prints, wall decals, stencils, and wallpaper.
- Fabric/textiles: fashion, clothes, accessories, quilting, home décor, and ribbon.
- Paper goods and stationery: notebooks, journals, calendars, cards, gift wrap, washi tape, tissue paper, and wrapping paper.
- Home décor: pillows, rugs, curtains, blankets, etc.
- Technology: phone cases, iPad and computer skins, repeating patterns on westies, etc.
- Kitchen: tea towels, paper plates and napkins, aprons, dishes, etc.
- Products and packaging: patterns on much of the packaging for any types of products, decorative boxes and mailers.
