Pilates is a systematic whole-body workout designed to strengthen the muscles, primarily the pelvic floor, abdominal and back muscles. Pilates training can take place on the mat and on specially designed equipment. It was invented by the German Joseph Hubertus Pilates (1883-1967). He first called his method Contrology, because Pilates is about controlling the muscles with the help of the mind.
