Hogwarts was founded over a thousand years ago by the four greatest witches and wizards of the age:
Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw & Salazar Slytherin.
The founders chose to split the students up into four houses, based on the qualities that each of them most prized.
They all placed a bit of their own magic into a hat – henceforth known as the Sorting Hat – that would continue to sort the students into their houses, long after they were gone.
Since then, at the beginning of every school year, a magical event called the Sorting Ceremony takes place in the Great Hall of Hogwarts. All of the staff & students of Hogwarts watch & celebrate, as each new student discovers their house by trying on the Sorting Hat.
