Meditation is the way in which we come to feel our basic inseparability
from the whole universe, and what that requires is that we shut up.
The basics
What you’ll need: A few minutes and clear
instructions. Where to go: Your room, your office, a private moment
alone — anywhere that’s fairly quiet and with minimal distractions.
How to get started: Devote three to five minutes at
roughly the same time every day to meditation. Make sure you’re
sitting or standing in a comfortable position. Focus on your breath,
but don’t try to clear your head completely. If your mind wanders,
acknowledge the thought and then re-center on your breath.
To make it easier: Download apps like the UCLA
Mindful app, Calm, Ten Percent Happier, and Headspace for guided
meditations. YouTube channels like Headspace, Goodful, and Calm also
offer free guided meditations. A meditation or yoga studio will also
have classes where teachers can provide instruction.
