Gamification and Game-Based Learning

Gamification and game-based learning are two approaches to applying games to education.

Gamification applies game elements (e.g., points, leader boards, badges) to nongame contexts (Deterding et al., 2011), such as giving out team points to reward positive learning behaviour in primary education (Sailer & Homer, 2019).

Whereas GBL involves designing games with specific learning objectives (Vaz de Carvalho & Coelho, 2022) such as a board game that gets children to move their character to different shops around the board and buy items from a shopping list. A game that teaches about handling money while encouraging counting and number skills.
