The Joy of Reading

“Books and doors are the same thing. You open them, and you go through into another world.”

I come from a line of female readers. My Grandma was an avid reader, largely of Irish family sagas which reminded her of home. My mother is likewise never without a book in her hand, although her tastes lean more towards murder mysteries and blush-inducing romances. Our weekly conversations often include a discussion on what we have recently read, or author recommendations where our tastes overlap. Some of my earliest memories are of her taking my brother and I to the library to take out new books which I devoured as soon as we got home. When the books ran out I would read the back of the tomato ketchup bottle, such was my hunger for words (as well as ketchup). As an adult I have come to appreciate how books can fit into your life however you need them to - they can be a means of escape, an educational tool, a way of connecting, and so much more.
