The art of winemaking is practice spanning thousands of years, and the wine vine was originally domesticated by the ancient greeks. Wine grapes have been specifically cultivated to taste of different fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices and natural elements, instead of your typical "grapey" taste. Wine grapes are a perennial plant that is grown on the vine and has the potential to live for decades. It is harvested at different stages of ripeness, depending on the varietal. After being picked and crushed, yeast is then added, and the fermentation process begins (the conversion of sugar into alcohol). Wine is then either barreled for a period of ageing or it is bottled and prepared for the market. Wine is an extremely complex beverage with a noble history and an enduring legacy steeped in both tradition and constant inovation.
