Volleyball,

A sport where you can fly

Volleyball is a team sport that can either be played indoors or outdoors (i.e. beach volleyball). In indoor volleyball, the court is 18m x 9m and is divided by a net that varies in height depending on who is playing (womens, mens, or co-ed). On each side, there are 6 players on the court each with their own specific role to proficiently keep the ball up and hit over by the third hit. The three hits are usually in this order:

  1. Bump, also known as a recieve
This is usually the first touch taken from the back line players, when the ball is coming from the opposite side of the court. Typically done with hands in front of you, flexing your forearms to make a strong platform that the ball can bounce off of.

  2. Set
The second touch reserved for the Setter who is described to have "hands" who is in the frontline of the court. Done with hands overhead, with hands forming semicircles that would almost catch the ball and 'toss' the ball at the appropriate height for hitter.

  3. Hit, also known as a spike or kill
The third and last hit done with a 3-step sequence that is followed by a jump to swing at the ball set by the setter. The most optimal hit is done with the force built up in a bow-and-arrow stance while in the air. The hitter(s) are usually the other two frontline players but if the setter deems necessary, the backline can also be set to hit the ball as such.
