The charming nēnē is the official bird of the state of Hawaii, named
after its distinctive call.
Nēnēs are curious and inquisitive herbivores. Their main predators are
hawks, owls, rats, cats and other mammals.
The rarest goose in the world, the nēnē is a success story for
wildlife conservation: in the 1950s, there were fewer than 50 nēnēs
remaining. Thanks to a successful breeding program lead by
