Artemisia Lomi, also known as Artemisia Gentileschi was born on July 8 in 1593 and lived to about 1656 although no exact date can be determined. Artemisia was working at the time when few women were given a chance at any artisitic training or the ability to work as a professional artist. Many of her paintings deal with religious allegories, bible stories, and also myths. Such as Susanna and the Elders (1610) and Judith Slaying Holofernes(1614-1620) as notably example of this.
Her talent for naturally capturing the female figure and her mastery of colour and shadows have led to her producing some of the greatest art works of the 17th century. Long overshadowed by other male artists, her art has seen an rise in popularity in recent years. Many famous galleries now house some of Artemisia's works and even run major exhibitions on her, such as the National Gallery in London.
