What is type one Diabetes?

Did you know, that the majority of things people know about diabetes is a myth...

It's time to debunk the myths!

Diabetics can't eat sugar!!

Many people believe that individuals with diabetes can't eat sugar!
This is certainly not true! Type one diabetes is managed with artificial insulin. The best way to explain it is individuals without diabetes have a working pancreas whereas us individuals with T1 diabetes have to do the work of our pancreas ourselves.

Diabetes is caused by eating sugar!!

T1 Diabetes is not caused by eating lots of sugar!
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks itself by mistake where the reaction destroys the cells in the pancreas that make insulin, called beta cells. This process can go on for months or even years before any symptoms appear.

Cumin cures diabetes

Cumin does not cure type one diabetes😂
Unfortunately Type one diabetes is irreversible, however scientists are looking at new treatments called immunotherapies which could help to prevent, stop and cure the condition.

With Diabetes some of you may be shocked with what we experience from other people.
Those of us with it perhaps not so much.

Here's some of our Type one diabetics experiences with those uneducated on diabetes.

Christina

'I remember at my old job someone was sharing doughnuts out to everyone we worked with but me, she confidently told me I cant eat it, I tried explaining to her I could but she just was not having it, to make matters worse I work at a hospital.'

Bethany

'I was out drinking with my girlfriend, due to high sugars I need to wee a lot, walked up to a club that said free entry and asked if I could go in to just use the toilet and explained how im diabetic, he refused to let me in and just said "you shouldn't be drinking if you're diabetic" like sometimes I feel like people think diabetics shouldn't have a life?'
