Tar is an Iranian stringed instrument that is played with a mallet. Tar is
common in Iran and some other regions of the Middle East, such as
Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, and other regions near the
Caucasus, for playing the traditional music of these countries and
regions. Tar existed from the time of Farabi (about 260 AH - 339 AH), a
famous Iranian musician, and after him, Safiuddin Ermoi and others have
progressed to perfection. Based on this, the sample of Salf tar related to
the Safavid era (1080 AH) can be seen in the picture below related to the
paintings of Hasht Behesht Palace in Isfahan.
In the past, the Iranian Tar had five strings . Gholam Hossein Darvish or Darvish Khan adds a sixth string to it, which is still used.
