La Catrina is an image that was published in 1873 in Mexico by the Mexican cartoonist José Guadalupe Posada
(1852-1913). Today this image is widely associated with the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos).
The original name of the engraving was Calavera garbancera. That is the name that was given to people who sold chickpeas (garbanzos), and who pretended to be fully European, denying their indigenous cultural heritage.
The illustration was intended to constitute a criticism, as well as a satire, of some characters of Mexican
society at that time.
