On 2nd August 2019, Karishma Jangid hosted a Tweetchat curated by Abdul Mufeez Shaheed @abdulmshaheed about
“Young women
empowerment”.
The chat began by discussing the different barriers that limit young women from achieving their potential, be it
at
home, in schools, or even in their communities. The participants replied with some very relevant points like a
patriarchal setup, orthodox parents, economic status, social status, etc. This was followed by analyzing the
role of the
NGOs and Civil society in advancing the growth of young women. The responses received included creating
awareness,
advocacy, pushing the legislation of rights and so on. Then the participants were asked to suggest the type of
education/awareness needed for young women to succeed as well as to name the sectors that lack women’s
participation. It
was agreed that along with access to formal higher education, women also need specialized skills training and
proper
mentoring. Also, it was acknowledged that sectors like politics, government, and technology need more female
participation to ensure gender balance. The participants then recommended the names of a few organizations that
tirelessly work for women empowerment. The discussion was finally concluded by exchanging views about how we can
change
the mindset of our society and encourage people to discuss taboo topics with their daughters.
This discussion was an eye-opener and a definite step in the direction of empowering young women by giving them
opportunities, an open mindset, and our endless support!
