How to make a Vieux Carré

Craft the classic New Orleans cocktail

Vieux carré cocktail served over ice with a lemon twist on a silver tray

The first time a View Carré was suggested to me, it was described by the bartender as "an upgraded Manhattan." This first one I had was served up, and that's still the way I prefer them, although it seems they are more commonly served over a big cube. Whichever way you prefer, this is a must-try cocktail for any whiskey fan.

The cocktail was invented at the Carousel Bar in New Orleans, and has because a quintessential New Orleans cocktail (although it's popularity is most often overshadowed by that of the Sazerac). Part of the reason for this might be the rather lengthy ingredient list for a Vieux Carré. If you want to make one yourself, I recommend this variation on Death & Co.'s recipe:

Stir with ice, then strain into a coupe glass. Express a lemon peel over the glass and serve. Enjoy!
