Golden Retriever temperament is a distinctive feature, and is described in racial regulations as « friendly and confident ». They are good family pets and, particularly, can be patient with children, especially if they socialize and are trained from puppies. They are not single-person dogs, as they will generally be just as kind to strangers as they are to those they know. Their confident and friendly disposition makes them bad guard dogs. Any way of aggression unprovoked or hostile towards people, dogs and other animals, whether in the ring or in the community, is considered unacceptable and is not in line with the character of the breed. He is also not usually shy or nervous. A typical golden retriever should be calm, naturally smart, and docile. The dog is also recognized for its intelligence. The breed was ranked fourth — out of 131 breeds analyzed — in the classification of Stanley Coren about the intelligence of dogs, after border collie, poodle and German Shepherd, as one of the smartest dogs classified according to their training ability and obedience to command.
