Kids learn the best, via play. It is their primary role and a basic right.
Play serves as a key for communication and for development. And for us
adults, who are willing to reach out to the children, a beautiful way to
do so is by adjusting ourselves to their level, following their lead, and
being present in play-together moments. When we allow ourselves to be led
by the child, we as well might benefit a lot!
Occupational therapists describe playing, both as a goal and a tool to
improve daily functioning and to integrate into society. I believe that
joining the child's play time according to their own interest and
motivation (even when it looks narrow) allows us to expand the child's
communication skills and creativity. Playing with a partner can give the
child a safe space to practice many social skills, and the adult can learn
how to support it during shared play.
