Telfar global is my favourite brand of all time for so many reasons.
From the causes they support to their gorgeous bags, I am obsessed!
The owner of the brand,
Telfar Clemens
is a Liberian American fashion designer that first founded the
genderless and unisex brand in 2004. However, it wasn't until 2014 that
the brand released their most popular bag till date - the shopping tote
bag. Nicknamed 'the Bushwick birkin', the shopping tote bags gained
major popularity in 2020 and I'll tell you how.
Pure Hardwork and determination - It's 2014 and
states in the USA were finally waking up and throwing out their
same-sex marriage bans as Ebola shook the world. Telfar had one chance
and he took it by the horns, incame the birth of the Bushwick birkin
(the shopping bags gained a cult-like following in Brooklyn hence the
nickname). In 2017, Telfar won the Council of Fashion Designers of
America(CFDA)/Vogue Fashion Fund (which he also won again in 2021).
The money received was used to invest back into the Telfar brand and
further boosted their following around the world.
Collaborations with purpose - One thing Telfar's
going to do is a make a fire collab. Their 2017 collaboration with
'White Castle' to redesign their uniforms led to the brand using the
proceeds from the collaboration to bail minors out of
Rikers island.
Telfar is for everyone - By 2020, everyone and their
mama wanted/already had a telfar bag. With a full on endorsement from
Oprah to a number of your favourite celebrites e.g Beyonce and
Saweetie, just to mention a few - have been seen with the Bushwick
birkin in one of the many colours and sizes. The brand's brilliant
business model of weekly drops, ensured that humans get bags, none of
that pesky bot business and, the affordable price point for the
shopping bags also reinforces the brands motto of 'not for you - for
everyone'.
