The Middle Ages are ignorantly often referred to as "The Dark Age", where people (especially soldiers) seemingly had no regard
for the lives of others and
those with higher military status could do as they pleased - even at the expenses of innocent people.
This cannot be further from the truth, at least for Knights. To be a Knight in the Middle Ages not only meant that
you had to be a skilled warrior and know how to swing a sword, but also that you had to be deemed "worthy" of your title and of
the very sword you carried - and if a Knight was caught breaking the rules of said Code he'd be thrown out of the Chivalry Order with dishonor
on the spot, isolated from everyone and even exiled or executed.
It really makes sense, since people who are trained to kill should also be trained to avoid killing needlessly, to be merciful and
respectful of other people - even if they're enemies.
But let's dive deeper into that topic: the "Antico Codice Cavalleresco" was written around the year 1200 and it contained a set of rules
for Knights, most of which were about the obligation to defend both the honor and physical safety of "those who are weak and oppressed" and generally
anyone who was in need of any help, as the Knight had to be so valorous he couldn't deny any "reasonable request for help". They were also obligated to "respect and never badmouth
any religion" - even if that religion's God was not the one from the Bible, as it was dishonorable for a Knight to be disrespectful of other people's
beliefs.
Knights were actually pretty progressive for the century they lived in, and they were very proud of being (basically) the superheroes of their times.
Their code of honor is so inspirational that even people from the contemporary world should take example from the Knights of the past, and stick
to the old - yet honorable - principles of the Code.
Here are some of my favorite rules from the Code:
[INCIPIT]
A Knight is devoted to valor
His heart knows only virtue
His sword defends those in need
His strength sustains the weak
His words speak only the truth
His wrath comes upon the wicked
