Unfortunately, illiteracy, especially in the United States is extremely high. According to the Literacy Project, 65% of America’s fourth graders do not read at a proficient level. Students who do not receive early reading intervention are less likely to improve their reading abilities later on. Reading illiteracy continues to affect students into adulthood as 45 million Americans are functionally illiterate and cannot read above a fifth-grade level. Students who have literacy problems are more likely to live in poverty and have health problems when they become adults as well.
