Elkhounds are a apart from the Spitz family breeds. You may know
the more popular Spitz breeds such as the Husky, Akita, Samoyed, and
Alaskan Malumutes. While they are from the same family Norwegian Elkhounds
have their own distint markings and traits.
Norwegain Elkhounds are the national dog of Norway.
They have a rich history of being the hunting dog of the Vikings.
Elkhounds were nutorious for taking down bear, moose, and elk (hence the name).
The breed gained popularity in the United States when President Hoover recieved
one as a gift from the American Elkhound Association in 1931 to replace his old dog King Tut.
Norwegain Elkhounds are the perfect hunting/gaurd dog.
Even if you are not a hunter they still make great pets!
Elkhounds are a high energy dog so training and exercise are
extremely important. Families with older children are encouraged,
because small children are often mistaken for prey.
