The Tale of Astoria vs the Sea Lions

An Oregon Coast story

Sea Lions all over the docks with boats and the Astoria Megler bridge in the background

The sea lions were becoming a problem.
While they may be cute, and their bark may echo across town, they took over the dock that many local fisherman use.

And they were not letting fishermen pass.

A sea lion with its mouth open

There was an attempt

After a few attempts to irritate the sea lions, the Port decided to break out the big guns- and by big guns, it was actually a whale. A fake mechanical whale, made of fiberglass, and piloted by a human. The Port meant business.

A fake orca in the mouth of the Columbia River with a pirate ship and the Astoria Megler bridge in the background

But the whale...
sank.

The pilot of the faux orca (who may or may not also resemble a villain from Scooby Doo) was not pleased. An old white man peering out of an access hole of the fake orca

The Port of Astoria decided to try one more thing.

It would be very silly.

But it just might work. Docks in Astoria with air dancers

IT WORKED!

The silly wacky wavy inflatable arm guys were the talk of the town, and word got out about the whole problem and its silly solution on the evening news in Portland, Oregon.

But the people in Astoria didn't care.

They had managed to solve their problem, Astoria-style.
