It's no secret that soccer is not on the same caliber as others in the
United States. It is even more so concerning the women's game. When we
think of women's soccer today, some popular names that come to mind might
be: Alex Morgan, Sophia Smith, Rose Lavelle, Sam and Kristie Mewis and so
on. But how did they get to where they are now? Talent and determination
no doubt, but who paved the way for women's soccer to be what it is today?
This blog highlights the careers of a group of women referred to as the
91ers. These women are considered the pioneers of women's soccer
in the United States and played pivotal roles in establishing a dominant
and flourishing presence.
Of these women include: Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy, Brandi Chastain, Kristine
Lilly, Joy Fawcett and Michelle Akers. Their journey to bring the US
Women's National Team (USWNT) on the highest pedastal of soccer in the
world was no easy feat. They faced many challenges and obstacles along the
way (both team and personal) and fought to inspire little boys and girls
to love soccer and to believe that they too can dare to dream.
