Weight and Health
Weight is only one of many determinants of health
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a person's weight in kilograms (or pounds) divided by the square of height in meters (or feet). A high BMI can indicate high body fatness. BMI screens for weight categories that may lead to health problems, but it does not diagnose the body fatness or health of an individual. A new study found that your waist-to-hip ratio might be a more accurate measure of what's a healthy weight for you than your BMI. If you're concerned about what these numbers mean for your health, there are steps that you can take to reach a weight that supports your health. However, bmi is still used in parts of medicine due to its advantages, some of these advantages are:
- As stated, BMI helps measure the obesity rate in people.
- When the BMI of a significant population is calculated, it helps researchers gather data that can be used to examine the obesity epidemic.
- It helps researchers determine the pattern of diet that results in obesity in a large group of people.
