Health information management is a great way to help support and contribute to health facilities without being in the 'front-lines' as a clinican treating patients and the like.
Becoming a Health Information Manager (HIM) is a great way to get involved in health practices including four main areas:
- Health informatics (computing),
- Health data analysis (research),
- Clinical classification (allocation of funding), and
- Management (both staffing and health information).
There are both traditional roles, such as clinical coders, medical record management, or statutory reporting, and non-traditional roles.
The non-traditional roles include positions that involve the usage of HIM knowledge in areas outside of health information services (HIS), the main working area of HIMs. This might include data managers, research officers, software company positions, and business analysts.
The variety of job opportunities for qualified HIMs are so vast, it allows for flexibility in the workplace and multiple pathway options.
How do I know this occupation suits me?
Due to the variety of roles HIMs can be involved in, many skills can be helpful in learning to become a HIM including computing skills, patience, organisation, perfectionism, and time-management.
It can also suit people who have a clinical background who want to change their profession or those with IT skills who want to be a part of the health sector.
There is a high demand for HIMs, especially with the increasing rate of advanced technologies and modernisation of health facilities and systems, therefore, the employment rate is high.
