Pilates is a system of low impact exercises designed to improve physical strength, flexibility and posture and enhance mental awareness. This mind body exercise regime was developed in the early 20th century by German physical trainer Joseph Humbertus Pilates, and was originally named "Contrology". The pilates method involves a mind-body centering technique that emphasises the importance of exectuting movements from a central core of stability, while focusing on breathing control and body awareness, and then adjusting the intensity of exercises by adding various limb movements and resistance (pilates equipment eg. resistance bands, reformer, cadillac table and more). Pilates offers many benefits including improved physical and mental wellbeing.
