Elephants are large, intelligent mammals found in a variety of habitats across Africa and Asia. They are known for their strong social bonds and their highly developed brains, which are among the largest of any land animal. They have excellent memories and can recognize other elephants they have met before. The forest elephant is the smaller cousin of the African savanna elephant. Forest elephants live in families of up to 20 individuals and forage on leaves, seeds, fruit and tree bark. They provide key ecosystem services including dispersing seeds and clearing vegetation to allow sunlight to reach shorter plants.
