Hikes in the Dolomites

Lake Antermoia, a pearl set in a lunar landscape

Lake Antermoia

Lake Antermoia is considered to be one of the most beautiful lakes in the Dolomites and it is one of the main destinations for hikers who visit the aerea in the summer. It is located in Val di Fassa between the peaks of the Catinaccio, one of the main mountain groups of the Dolomites, located at 2500 meters above sea level.
The waters of Lake Antermoia are of an intense blue color, the reason being that it is mainly fed by melt waters. The snow that falls abundantly at these altitudes during the winter season melts during the winter season and forms the mirror of water of the antermoia lake with its turquoise blue color.
Lake Antermoia takes its name from the Antermoia peak that overlooks it and in the immediate vicinity is the Antermoia Refuge and it plays a large part in ladin tradition and culture. Antermoia is infact the name of a beautiful nymph that lived in the waters of the lake of the "Rosen Garten" (Rosengarten/Catinaccio). Many Ladin legends originate from this spectacular lake.

How to get there

The lake, and the refuge of the same name, delightfully secluded in this northern part of the Rosengarten, are accessible only with long paths; from the Val di Fassa going up the Val Udai to the Passo di Dona 2516 m., or covering the entire Valle del Vaiolet or again, crossing the Larsec Plateau.
