Figure skating
is a sport performed by individuals, pairs or groups on ice with figure
skates. As an ice sport, it is part of the Winter Olypmic Games. This
page will focus on the main elements of figure skating: jumps and spins.
Combined with other elements, such as footwork or lifts (depending on
the subdiscipline of figure skating!), these provide the foundation for
understanding both competitive and professional figure skating.

Figure skating jumps are considered
the more athletic element. These are often named for the person who
invented them and are a relatively recent addition to competition. Jumps
can be classified by type and number of revolutions. There are two types
of jumps: edge jumps and toe jumps. Number of revolutions usually depend
on the skater's skill and range from single to quadruple jumps.
Figure skating spins , the more
artistic element, are performed by all figure skating disciplines. Spins
are classified by type and position. There are two types of spins:
backward and forward; depending on direction. There are three basic spin
positions: upright, sit, and camel spins, but there are also flying and
combination spins.
