Crochet has been a passion of mine since I was 15 years old. At the time,
I was interested in learning to make
kufis
(a hat type traditionally worn by men of the African Diaspora). My
grandmother gave me my first yarn and hook, while my best friend gave me a
book with short synopses and illustrations. Thus, began my journey for
crocheting. From there, I mainly made scarves and blankets; I
occasionally, drifted into researching how to add a border or how to
crochet letters.
Not until I was around 28 did I stumble upon online marketplaces that sold
patterns that allowed me to make other products. These included: skirts,
socks, shorts, sweaters, you name it! Before, when my grandmother would
ask me to make socks, I was intimidated! I didn't believe I could do it.
It is amazing to see how far I have come. From purchasing patterns,
workshops, and classes to selling my own handmade items, life has a way of
coming full circle! So I would encourage anyone to learn to crochet or
purchase your first crochet wearable. Either way you won't regret it!
