Over the course of lockdown, I've challenged myself to read more and read a more diverse array of titles. Here, I've tried to document them and what I think of them and hopefully recommend to others! Find out more about the books I'm reading here!
Set amidst the Great Depression of the 1930s,the narrative follows Tom Joad, a convict recently released from prison and returning home to his family's farm in Oklahoma only to find it is destitute. Themes of power and class divide are prominent as well as a distant hope for the American Dream, where multiple characters move to California in the hopes of a better future for them and their families. Stereotypically, it's not the type of novel I usually read, however it was recommended to me and I'm really enjoying it so far.
Written quite like a memoir, Cusk explores themes of love, womanhood and art in her 4th book in her series as well as exploring these themes in more infamous titles such as Never Let me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. I found this book a very sluggish read and disagreed with her approach to certain subjects and at times felt ignorant of her own class and privilege. I really wouldn't recommend this book.
