If It Macra-makes You Happy
Reviving retro crafts
Macramé is a form of textile produced
using knotting techniques. One of the earliest recorded uses of
macramé-style knots as decoration
appeared in the carvings of the Babylonians and Assyrians. Fringe-like
plaiting and braiding adorned the costumes of the time and were captured
in their stone statuary. Though popularity faded over time, it resurged
in the 1970s in the form of home decorations, plant hangers, and
clothing accessories. By the 1980s,
macramé began to fall out of fashion
again. Currently, in the 2020s,
macramé has regained popularity with
fiber artists who share their projects and DIY videos online.
