In 1970, the construction of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant began. Chernobyl was a good location due to its small population and access to water. With the construction of the nuclear power plant, the city of Pripyat was also built nearby. In 1977, with the commissioning of the first reactor, 14,000 inhabitants moved to the city. These residents were workers at the nuclear power plant and their families. In 1986, 4 of 12 planned reactors were in operation and 2 were under construction when an explosion occurred in the 4th reactor of the power plant on April 26, 1986. Several factors were at play here.
