Esperanza Spalding, is an accomplished American bassist, singer, and composer. Spalding has won five Grammy Awards, a Boston Music Award, and a Soul Train Music Award. Although her debut album was an "exercise in joy and freedom," her second album, Esperanza, was created to reflect who she was as an artist. This album would win her first Grammy as well as lead to her playing for President Barack Obama at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. Spalding reaches a broad audience through her masterful fusion of jazz, Brazilian, and hip-hop elements.
Recently, Spalding made waves by leaving her position at Harvard University. She stated that what she aspires to cultivate and activate in her teaching does not align with Harvard's priorities.
