Brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice a day is the best way to get rid of plaque. If it is not completely removed, it hardens and becomes tartar (calculus). When this occurs, it requires dentist's attention.

Scaling is a dental procedure that helps prevent certain gum diseases such as gingivitis and other chronic oral conditions like halitosis (persistent bad breath). It is usually performed with a small purpose-made metal curette followed by polishing done with an electric rotary tool to ensure stain removal. Another reason why scaling should not be overlooked is despite the flawless hygiene practices tartar can accumulate beneath the gums and can transform into advance gum diseases like periodontitis that involves recession and bone-loss, overall deteriorating the dental health and to some extent the systemic health.
