What is a service dog?

Service dogs perform tasks for their disabled handler. They are legally protected to accompany their handler everywhere.

What do service dogs do?

Some of the tasks that service dogs do: They guide Blind people. They alert Deaf people. They assist wheelchair users with dropped items, closing doors, or even adjust their sitting position. They can protect someone when they are having a seizure. They can even remind people to take their medicine!

So service dogs arent just for blind people?

Correct! Service dogs are used by people with mental illnesses, autism, seizures, diabetes and countless other conditions!

Can I pet a service dog?

Please do not pet service dogs! They need to be 100% focused on their handler to keep them safe. Distracting a service dog with a pet can put all involved in danger. In addition, some states have laws prohibiting interactions with service dogs.

What can I do to help?

The best thing you can do is to let service dogs do their jobs. If you want to be more involved you can sign up to be puppy raiser. You can also donate to organizations like Canine Companions who provide service dogs to adults, children and veterans! Click to be a puppy raiser!
