Between fried pizzas and pizzas a portafoglio (folded pizza), street food in the vibrant costal city of Naples and surrounding area is plentiful and more often than not, carbohydrate based. Many delicacies are fried, as the cuoppo napoletano, the iconic cone-shaped paper filled with a variety of tasty morsels. Some vendors offer cones filled with fish or with mozzarella and potato croquettes. The important thing is that the fried food is dry enough to be eaten in the street without becoming a greasy mess! Pizza, on the other hand, can be eaten in different ways and presents diverse varieties. Pizza a portafoglio is a smaller pizza turned into a booklet to enjoy it as street food, folded in four parts. Otherwise it can be tasted fried, in a very particular version, composed usually with ricotta, tomato, mozzarella and chips on the inside of the pizza. A very famous salty snack is represented by taralli, a backed product with an unmistakable ring shape to be enjoyed at any time of the day. It can be an excellent aperitive when accompanied by a glass of local red wine or a delicious snack for a break. Finally some dessert, which is also possible to enjoy while walking around the lively city centre. Among the most popular sweet street food, Sfogliatella has an important role in the dessert specialties. Its crust (short or puff) is filled with ricotta and enriched with semolina. Sfogliatella can be eaten anytime: breakfast, with coffee after lunch and as a snack, as well as the Babà. The latter is the perfect finger pastry recognised by its extreme softness, which allows it to absorb the alcoholic syrup flavored with Rum.
