Ada Lovelace

The first computer programmer

Ada

Ada Lovelace was an English mathematician and writer whose passion and vision for technology have made he a powerful symbol for modern women in technology. Her mother, Lady Byron, “Princess of Parallelograms”, provided Ada with a formal education in mathematics. In 1843 Ada published a translation on the work of Luigi Menabrea about the Analytical Engine, to which she added extensive notes. Of particular interest was note G, where Ada described a stepwise sequence of operations for solving certain mathematical problems ( the Bernoulli numbers), thus becoming “the first programmer”. Furthermore, Ada was also the first to speculate that the Engine could “act upon things besides number” thus suggesting that the machine could manipulate symbols in accordance to rules and that numbers could represent entities other that quantity. Her legacy iscelebrated worldwide in the “Ada Lovelace Day” and she has even a computer language named after her!
