The epitome of English culture: a cup of tea

The unwritten rules on brews

A cup of tea transcends all social classes and situations. Whether it's a wake-me-up alongside a fry up, a comforting hug after a break up or a companion to your bedside book, no one can deny the versatility of a cup of tea.

The best bag

While all Brits can agree on it's importance, you may find the best tea bag brand a source of contention. While North may favour Yorshire Tea, you're more likely to find the signature green and red of a PG Tips in the South. Heading to Scotland? Gaffer recommends picking up a box of Tetley tea bags.

Spilt milk

Call us old-fashioned, but nothing quite beats cows milk in a brew. It's the only one that gives it that truly wonderfully opaque beige colour we look for. Full-fat or semi-skimmed, we're not fussy. Just don't pull out that watery red-topped milk. Nowadays, much to the joy of the lactose intolerant community, as we become more eco-conscious, there are a lot more milk alternatives available. From oat to soya to almond, take your pick.

Ask before you add!

To sugar or not to sugar

As for sugar, be sure to ask. Depending on your sweet tooth and size of vessel, this can range from 0-3. Any more than that and you're just drinking sugary water.
