  • What is it? Ruins of ancient fortress

  • Where? Kalnik, Koprivnica-Križevci County

  • Activities: Hiking, Walking, Alpinism

The old town of Veliki Kalnik is a complex of fortifications built from the 12th century onwards on Mount Kalnik near the village of Kalnik. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric and Roman times. The fortress was first mentioned in 1243, when King Bela IV. emphasizes its importance in the fight against the Tatars. According to legend, the king took refuge on Kalnik with his entourage, fleeing from the Tatars. The local population fed them with plums, so they were called plum farmers; The Tatars gave up, and the king granted them noble titles. At Kalnik, the Tatars experienced their first defeat. The old legend about the plum growers in Kalnik inspired Šeno to write the work "Plums" and Milutin Mayer to write his historical novel "Tatars in Croatia". The Hungarian-Croatian king Sigismund of Luxembourg and his wife Barbara Celjska ("the black queen") stayed in the fortress. The owners of the fort were nobles, bans, the bishop of Zagreb, etc. Among the noble families, the following stand out: Erdödy, Drašković, Keglević, Orehovečki, Kosače, and others.

  • Where? Slunj-Rastoke, Karlovac County

  • Activities: Walking, Visiting Museum and Fairy Garden, Swimming

Rastoke is is a small canyon with a cute village and several waterfalls from one meter to some 12 meters high. If you start on the west side at the information kiosk you will first see the waterfalls of 12 meters from the top of the Korane Canyon. Soon you reach the wooden bridge with a restaurant and a waterfall with a height of 10 meters. Now walk down the street until you get on a (larger) bridge. Turn right on to the best part of Rastoke, with restaurants and beautiful waterfalls in a cute area. A guarantee for beautiful pictures. After 100 meters you can turn right (you have to pay admission), where you go on a sort of island that comes with the best views and the opportunity to descend into a cave and a photo viewpoint on a giant rock. Really gorgeous. When you’re done go a little bit further along the river until the houses stop. The entire track you can walk within the hour. It is also possible to extent the walk, further on the river Slunjcice, but due to heavy thunderstorm with hail so big as a pingpong balls, we had to leave.
