Jason "J.D." Dean is a fictional character from the movie and musical, Heathers. J.D. is a phychopath with a unique view on society. He is originally played by Christian Slater in the teen comedy, Heathers, made in 1988. Which is later adapted into a musical, starring Ryan Mcartan as J.D.
Ryan Mcartan has been in many broadway productions including
Wicked,
as Fiyero, Hans in
Frozen,
and of course, J.D. in Heathers.
Ryan's J.D. was perfectly phsycotic and
charming. Not to mention his vocals. He was excelent at mixing his voice
and switching from his head voice to chest voice to create manipulation
though his singing. He also knew how to work with angles to create
delusion and use his posture to show emotion. That is why he is my
favorite J.D.
Jamie Mascato is an award winning actor in both
West End
and Televison. In West End, he is most known for playing Tony in
West Side Story,
Enjolras in
Les Miserables,
and J.D.
Jamie portrays J.D. more destructive and unhindged than other
actors do. He shows this through how gritty and rough he makes his voice
sounds, yet has a great contrast when he switches to his soft head voice.
Jamie playing unhinged characters really fits him and that is why he is my second favorite.
Simon Gordan isn't as well known as Ryan or Jamie, but hes been in many productions and is equally as talented. He played Cristian in
Moulin Rouge,
Prince Charming in
Cinderella,
Danny Zuko in
Grease.
Simon's voice is softer and more laid back than the usual casting, yet he used his talents excellently. His acting and vocals are so different than how most actors play J.D., but it is honestly so refreshing and I love his take on his character. He definitly deserves to be in my top three.
