The Cathedral invoked by Mario Vargas Llosa is not the sacred place of seclusion, where the soul finds peace, solitary refuge, reconciliation. Ironic and paradoxical, this name is borne by a wretched tavern on the outskirts of Lima in the 60s, with lame tables, with cigarette smoke and heavy smells, with obscene gestures and words. This is the background against which the conversation of the two protagonists takes place, coming from different social categories, but revolted by the absurdity of the same decaying world.
