Sanskrit: योग, lit.'yoke' or 'union' pronounced [joːɡɐ]) is a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India and aim to control (yoke) and still the mind, recognizing a detached witness-consciousness untouched by the mind (Chitta) and mundane suffering (Duḥkha). There is a wide variety of schools of yoga, practices, and goals in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, and traditional and modern yoga is practiced worldwide.
Mermaid Pose is an intense twisting backbend and hip/heart opener. It’s based on the One-Legged King Pigeon Pose (aka Pigeon Pose). Mermaid Pose offers the same wow factor as the original, but it’s a bit more beginner-friendly because it doesn’t require as much strength and flexibility.
Downward Facing Dog is perhaps the most recognized posture in Yoga. The pose is a forward bend named after the resemblance to a dog stretching out with its hind legs extending upward and both head and forelegs facing downward.
Chaturanga is a common posture in vinyasa yoga classes, also called flow yoga, as it is a transition pose between plank pose and upward-facing dog. Chaturanga strengthens the arms, shoulders, abdomen and back muscles. It also makes the wrists stronger and more flexible, in addition to toning the abdominal organs.
