Also known as opaque watercolour, gouache is a type of watermedia that
consists of colour pigment, water and a binding agent. Gouache is similar
to watercolour, as both can be re-wetted. However, it is also similar to
arcrylic and oil paints in that it is opaque and can form superficial
layers.
Gouache paint has a rich history and has been used as an art medium going
back at least 1200 years. A form of gouache was found to be used in
Ancient Egyptian painting. It has also been used in European manuscripts
and Persian miniatures.
Gouache paint is typically sold in tubes, however can be sold in pans as
well. It can be found in all good art stores.
There are many resources on the internet on learning how to use gouache regardless of experience. You can find a great beginner's tutorial here.
We're starting an gouache interest group. Everyone is welcome regardless of level or experience.
